Roadway Support Machines

Roadway Support Machines

Roadway Support Machines are deployed for the installation of steel arch supports when driving underground roadways. The machines essentially consist of a support-setting device and a work platform, with the support-setting device placing the roof bars or an entire roof-bar canopy. The work platform is used as storage space for the remaining support material required, such as props, lagging, bolts, clamps, etc. and also serves as a secure base for all jobs that have to be performed at the roadhead, such as setting props, bolting together clamps, installing lagging, bolting, back-filling, etc.

Generally three criteria are fulfilled by the deployment of roadway support machines:

  • Improved safety at the roadhead
  • Labour savings when excavating roadways
  • Improved performance and thus reduced costs

GTA has developed three roadway support machines for use in different operating environments. They differ in terms of size, design and operational capabilities.

AMG 2700

The AMG 2700 Roadway Support Machine is suspended from and travels on an overhead I 140 E rail and has been approved by the regional chief mines inspectorate as a mechanical forepoling device. It can be used in blasting and roadheader operations with advances of up to 2.4 m.

Advantages:

  • Support-Setting Device and work platform move independently
  • Short overall length due to integral drive unit
  • Support machine is suspended from and travels on an overhead monorail
  • Manoeuvrable in curves to a minimum radius of 6 m
  • Permits support installation in curves and roadway junctions (in accordance with equipment used)
  • Robust design suitable for mining applications

Optionally, the AMG 2700 Roadway Support Machine can be fitted with a shield offering protection against rockfalls in the area of the face.

AMG 2800

The AMG 2800 Roadway Support Machine is suspended from and travels on an overhead I 140 E rail and has been approved by the regional chief mines inspectorate as a mechanical forepoling device. Owing to its heavier-duty design and size, it is designed for blasting operations, but in exceptional cases with correspondingly large cross-sections can also be deployed in roadheader operations.

Advantages:

  • For advances of up to 3 m
  • Support-setting device and platform move independently
  • Short overall length due to integral drive unit
  • Support machine is suspended from and travels on an overhead rail
  • Manoeuvrable in curves to a minimum radius of 6 m
  • Permits support installation in curves and roadway junctions (in accordance with equipment used)
  • Robust design suitable for mining applications

Optionally, the AMG 2800 Roadway Support Machine can be fitted with a shield offering protection against rockfalls in the area of the face.

AMG 5000

GTA AMG 5000

The AMG 5000 Roadway Support Machine is suspended from and travels on an overhead I 140 E rail and has been approved by the regional chief mines inspectorate as a mechanical forepoling device. This machine was originally developed for roadheader operations, but can also be used just as well in support installation operations involving a combination of roof bolts and steel sections.

The main difference between this and the AMG 2700 and AMG 2800 machines is that the support-setting device is additionally pivotally mounted underneath the machine frame and is hydraulically pivotable by 50°. This means preassembled support units can be picked up from the roadway wall, swung across to the middle of the roadway and installed.

Advantages:

  • Roof bars can be picked up from the roadway wall with a swivelling support-setting device
  • Manoeuvrable in curves to a minimum radius of 6 m
  • Permits support installation in curves and roadway junctions
  • Short overall length due to integral drive unit
  • Integral, telescopic rockfall shield

Optionally, the AMG 5000 Roadway Support Machine can be fitted with a shield offering protection against rockfalls in the area of the face.
